Whit Picks: San Diego Birthday Trip Recap

3/07/2016 Unknown 5 Comments

Hey everyone! For the past week I've been in vacation/birthday mode so I took a short break from blogging to enjoy my mini vacay and relax! Last week I went to San Diego, California with family and my boyfriend to celebrate my birthday and enjoy some of what SD has to offer: great food, fun and sun! I'd like to share some highlights from the trip!

Where we stayed: Stay Alfred Vacation Rental

3 bedroom unit in a high rise building (Pinnacle on the Park)

I decided to find a vacation rental as opposed to a hotel so my group could stay in the same unit. I definitely recommend this for groups (as mentioned in my travel tips post) not only to save money, but get a chance to stay in some very nice properties and be able to cook and gather together in one space! We stayed in a Stay Alfred vacation unit, a 3 bedroom condo at Pinnacle on the Park - a very nice building in downtown San Diego. Stay Alfred was very helpful and their customer service was top notch before, during and after our stay. They definitely make it easy to get all questions answered and send all the info you need to easily check in once you arrive.

What I loved the most about our unit was how clean it was (we were some of the first to stay in the unit) and the view! We stayed way up on the 39th floor and had gorgeous views of downtown San Diego, mountains in the background, the Pacific Ocean and Coronado Island. Our unit came fully equipped with a nice kitchen, tv's and free wifi. One of the first things we did was shop for snacks and food to cook for breakfast, which was nice to have that option. We could have cooked all of our meals there but we decided to enjoy some of the local restaurants during our stay.

San Diego Club Crawl

To start off our trip we pre-purchased tickets to a club crawl downtown. The club crawl included free admission into 4 clubs and free drinks at some. I would definitely recommend it to try out multiple clubs in one night. All of downtown San Diego in the Gaslamp Quarter has a very lively nightlife scene, so on a Saturday night you will see tons of people out having a great time. We enjoyed talking to people on the streets and in our club crawl group. Here's a quick rundown of the clubs we visited that night after checking in at The Beer Company.

Bassment - This was a larger club with a nice vibe, but it was still pretty early in the night so we probably would have enjoyed it more had we stayed longer.

F6ixx - This was our favorite out of all the clubs visited. We loved the atmosphere, music and drinks here.

Sidebar - This was a nice smaller spot with nice decor. The music was a mix of EDM and hip hop.

Fluxx - This was the last stop and we found it to be a huge open space EDM club with dancers hanging from the ceiling.

The Food

Whiskey Girl - We went here for their Sunday brunch, but the night before noticed it was packed on a Saturday night. We arrived around noon and what drew us there was one thing - $10 bottomless mimosas! Their brunch menu was delicious as well:

I ended up getting the chicken and waffle sandwich with potatoes and we all had the Pink Lady mimosas. By the end of the brunch at 2pm, we were telling our waitress we couldn't handle any more mimosas lol. Everything was great and the space was nice. I would definitely go there again!

Basic Pizza - for dinner we tried a local pizza place that was a few blocks away. We ordered 2 small pizzas (which were huge) and it came out to $35, which fed 5 people and had leftovers. I had the sausage and pepperoni and liked their thin crust.

The Tavern - We stopped here after visiting Coronado Beach (gorgeous beach) to enjoy a late lunch. I liked the rustic style of the restaurant and food presentation. The mason jars were a nice touch. I tried a few items from their happy hour menu and liked them all.

La Puerta - I decided to go here for my birthday dinner because I wanted some good Mexican food and new this place had good reviews and a great happy hour special. We arrived very late (around midnight) but luckily the place was open till 2am. When we got in, we were welcomed by good music played by a dj and tv screens showing old episodes of Soul Train. I ordered the $5 carne asada quesadilla (which was delicious) and a Purple Haze margarita (also delicious).

I would definitely go there again and try the carne asada fries.

Miss Match Boutique - We stopped here at Coronado Ferry Landing Shops near where we caught our boat to and from downtown SD. Miss Match is a very cute boutique with adorable clothes and accessories. I wish we had one here! I got a pretty summer dress, black bag and a free pair of earrings (because it was my birthday)!

I love all my items and already get compliments on my new bag. Make sure you check out the Miss Match online store!

Overall I loved San Diego! The weather was perfect (70s and sunny every day) and I loved getting a break and celebrating with people I love. I would definitely recommend you visiting there soon!
